India’s Tablet Market Drops 32% in H1 2025 with Samsung On Top

India tablet market faced a sharp decline in the first half of 2025, with total shipments falling to 2.15 million units, down 32.2% year-over-year, according to IDC’s latest report.

Market Faces Historic Downturn

The decline was fueled primarily by a sharp fall in commercial tablet shipments, particularly government-funded education tenders and enterprise purchases. These segments dropped by 61.7% YoY, erasing years of accumulated growth.

By contrast, consumer demand showed resilience. Shipments in this segment surged 20.5% YoY, supported by online shopping platforms, festival promotions, and affordable financing schemes. This dual trend created a contrasting dynamic within the industry.

Slate Tablets Collapse While Detachables Grow

A closer look reveals slate tablets bore the brunt of the decline, contracting by 44.4% YoY. Their fall outpaced the overall market and became the key driver behind shrinking shipments.

Detachable tablets bucked the trend, recording an 18.9% YoY growth. Buyers increasingly opted for versatility and productivity features, making detachable models an attractive choice in both student and professional environments.

Samsung Retains Lead Despite Heavy Decline

Samsung continued to dominate, holding 41.3% market share with 886,000 units shipped. However, shipments dropped by 38.1% YoY, reflecting the broader commercial slump.

The company’s strength was seen in education projects and online retail channels. Despite falling volumes, Samsung remained the clear leader across both consumer and commercial categories.

Lenovo Climbs as Commercial Strength Pays Off

Lenovo secured the second spot with a 12.3% market share, shipping 264,000 units. Unlike rivals, Lenovo managed to grow by 12.6% YoY, capitalizing on enterprise and SMB demand.

Its momentum was also supported by strong e-tailer partnerships. Lenovo’s consistent growth across both consumer and business segments highlights its adaptive strategy in a shifting market.

Apple Holds Steady with Student-Centric Strategy

Apple captured an 11.8% share with 253,000 units shipped. Although shipments fell by 13.6% YoY, the brand maintained strong visibility in the consumer segment with student discounts and new iPad models.

In enterprise, Apple’s share crossed 20% as larger firms increasingly turned to premium solutions. This ensured Apple’s presence remained significant despite overall declines.

Xiaomi Gains on Affordable Growth

Xiaomi grew 28.5% YoY, reaching 244,000 units and securing 11.4% market share. Its success came from affordable, feature-packed tablets introduced in 2025.

The brand leveraged consumer appetite for budget-friendly devices with larger screens and stylus options. This positioned Xiaomi as a fast-rising competitor within the top four vendors.

Acer Suffers Severe Contraction

Acer faced the steepest drop, with shipments plunging 73.1% YoY to 196,000 units. Its reliance on government and education tenders left it vulnerable to cancellations.

Despite maintaining 9.1% market share, Acer’s weakened performance underscored the challenges of depending heavily on commercial contracts during downturns.

Consumer Market Emerges as Lifeline

IDC analysts note that the consumer segment will remain the engine of growth in coming years. Seasonal campaigns, cashback deals, and demand for larger screens are expected to push adoption further.

However, the commercial market is projected to continue its decline as refresh cycles lengthen and budget allocations shrink, making consumer purchases the primary driver of India’s tablet future.
