iOS 26: Apple Intelligence in iOS 26 adds over 20 new AI features but keeps the same 7GB storage requirement, making it easier for iPhone users to upgrade without losing space.
If you were worried that iOS 26 would demand even more of your iPhone’s storage for Apple Intelligence, there is good news. Apple has quietly updated its support documents to confirm that the storage requirement remains the same as last year. To run Apple Intelligence, you still need about 7GB of free space on your device.
A look back at rising storage needs
When Apple Intelligence first appeared in iOS 18.1, it required only 4GB of storage. But as new AI features rolled out in iOS 18.2, including Genmoji, enhanced Siri, and visual intelligence tools, the requirement nearly doubled to 7GB. That quick increase made many users worry that every major update would take another bite out of their storage.
iOS 26 adds more features without extra storage
Fast forward to iOS 26, which delivers more than 20 new AI tools and improvements. Surprisingly, Apple did not raise the storage demand. The company’s updated guidance still lists 7GB as the minimum, whether you are using Apple Intelligence on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. That means users with multiple Apple devices will see about 21GB total reserved for AI features.
This consistency suggests Apple may have optimized its models for better efficiency or repurposed existing ones for new features. Instead of piling on larger downloads, Apple seems to be focusing on delivering more capability within the same storage footprint.
Why it matters for iPhone owners
For iPhone users on 64GB or 128GB models, 7GB is still a noticeable hit. But the impact is softer this year, thanks to Apple’s latest lineup. Both the iPhone 17 and the new iPhone Air now start at 256GB of base storage, making the AI requirement far easier to absorb.
If space is tight, Apple allows you to disable Apple Intelligence entirely. Doing so removes the on-device models and frees up that storage. You can turn it back on later, and iOS will re-download the models when connected to Wi-Fi.
For now, the headline is refreshingly simple: iOS 26 brings more Apple Intelligence features, but no new storage squeeze.
