iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are almost here, but the real spotlight is not on the chip or the screen. All eyes are on the back, where rumors of a new aluminum and glass design with a wide camera bar and hidden charging window are stealing the show. The answer will finally be revealed when Apple takes the stage on September 9.
The Two Designs That Defined the Rumor Mill
For months, two stories have dominated the rumor cycle. One said the Pro models would stick with an all-glass back like the iPhone 16 Pro. The other proposed something far more dramatic: a two-tone rear built from aluminum with a glass “window” section. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, that second option is now looking like the real deal.
This design pairs a top-spanning camera bar with a cutout in the lower two-thirds for wireless charging. The logic is simple. Aluminum is lighter and handles heat better, but it blocks inductive charging. A glass rectangle keeps MagSafe and Qi charging fast, without needing the entire panel to be glass again. Combined with the new camera bar, it would mark one of the boldest visual shifts on a Pro iPhone in years.
Why the Back Matters This Year
Apple’s recent Pro models relied on titanium for durability. But titanium can feel heavy and has limited color options. Switching to aluminum would make the iPhone 17 Pro lighter, cooler to the touch, and easier to offer in brighter finishes. Early color chatter even points to a striking orange option that could highlight the glass window rather than hide it.
For users, the change could bring practical gains as well. A lighter device is easier to handle, a cooler frame is better for gaming and heavy use, and a smart cutout ensures wireless charging works exactly as expected. Whether Apple blends the glass into the same color as the aluminum or leans into a two-tone contrast remains unknown.
Prices Are Likely Heading Up
Alongside design shifts, Apple is expected to nudge prices upward in the United States. Analysts suggest a $50 to $100 increase on some models. Morgan Stanley believes the Pro will drop the 128 GB option, starting instead at 256 GB for $1,099 up from $999 last year. Jefferies predicts a 4%–5% hike linked to tariffs, while Bank of America points to a new ultra-slim “iPhone 17 Air” replacing the Plus and potentially priced $100 higher than the outgoing model.
Waiting for the Flip
All eyes are now on Tuesday, when Apple executives finally flip the iPhone 17 Pro around and show the back. If the aluminum-and-glass design ships, it will not just be about aesthetics. It will signal Apple’s priorities for 2025: blending style with comfort, and pairing premium looks with practical performance.
Until then, the back remains the biggest mystery and the headline feature of Apple’s most important launch of the year.
