Apple’s bold decision to add a notch to the MacBook Pro lineup was meant to maximize screen space, but it has ended up creating a wave of usability complaints from users. What was supposed to be a sleek design upgrade has turned into a daily frustration for many professionals and gamers who rely on the MacBook Pro as their main device.
One of the biggest issues reported is how the notch interacts with the macOS menu bar. Users with multiple apps running in the background have found that icons often disappear behind the cutout without any indication they are still active. Apps like 1Password, Bartender, and Little Snitch have all been affected, leaving users confused and sometimes assuming those services are no longer running. The problem is not simply cosmetic it can affect productivity and security when users cannot quickly access the tools they depend on. Unlike Windows PCs, macOS does not offer an overflow menu to reveal hidden items, which has forced people to either manually rearrange icons or turn to third-party software to manage the clutter.
Beyond the hidden icons, there are also inconsistencies in how macOS handles the notch across different apps. Some software, like DaVinci Resolve, prevents the cursor from entering the notch area, while others such as Finder do not impose those same restrictions. The result is an uneven experience where users find the mouse pointer disappearing unpredictably, depending on the program they are working with. These inconsistencies have been widely criticized as a sign that Apple has not fully standardized how the notch should behave at the operating system level.
Gamers are running into a different set of problems. Full-screen games on MacBook Pro models with a notch sometimes render incorrectly, resulting in blurry or squashed visuals. This issue comes from macOS APIs reporting resolutions that mistakenly include the notch area, where nothing can actually be displayed. Games such as No Man’s Sky, Stray, and Riven have all been affected by this flaw, leaving users disappointed with the visual quality on otherwise powerful machines. Developers have been forced to find workarounds, with some titles offering 16:10 aspect ratio settings to bypass the issue. Apple has been aware of the problem since at least 2023, but there has been no official fix rolled out to date.
Workarounds do exist for many of these problems. Power users have discovered hidden Terminal commands that can adjust menu bar spacing, making room for more icons without them being swallowed by the notch. Others rely on third-party tools like Bartender, Hidden Bar, or Ice, which allow finer control over which icons appear in the menu bar and when. For gaming, sticking to 16:10 resolution settings can minimize distortion, though it does not fully solve the problem.
Despite the backlash, Apple has stood by the notch design, emphasizing the larger display area and thinner bezels it enables. However, for many users, the promise of a more immersive screen is overshadowed by the daily annoyances it creates. Unless Apple delivers a system-level fix, the notch is likely to remain one of the most divisive features on the MacBook Pro in recent memory.
