Apple’s next-generation MacBook Pro could be one of its most significant laptop updates in years. Reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggest the redesigned model will introduce an OLED display and debut the upcoming M6 chip. However, the timeline may slip to early 2027, as Apple adjusts its Mac release schedule.

OLED Upgrade Set to Transform the MacBook Pro

For the first time, Apple is expected to replace its mini-LED panels with OLED technology on the MacBook Pro. The move promises richer colors, higher contrast, and improved energy efficiency, potentially leading to longer battery life.

Samsung Display is reportedly preparing to supply the new panels using advanced Gen 8.6 OLED manufacturing, which allows for larger, more cost-effective sheets. This could help Apple maintain premium display quality without sharply increasing production costs.

The OLED transition may also coincide with a design refresh. Industry insiders believe the MacBook Pro could eliminate its signature notch, replacing it with a hole-punch camera or even integrating macOS’s new live activities into a Dynamic Island-style cutout.

M6 Chip Could Arrive with the Redesigned Models

While an M5-powered MacBook Pro is still expected in 2026, the major redesign with the M6 chip will follow. Apple’s M6 processors are rumored to push performance and efficiency gains beyond the already impressive M-series track record, offering faster AI-accelerated workflows and improved GPU capabilities.

Historically, Apple has released multiple MacBook Pro updates in a single year, as seen in 2023 with the M2 Pro/Max in January and M3 Pro/Max in October. If the M5 rollout is delayed, Apple could skip directly to the M6 for its OLED models, narrowing the wait for users who have held onto older Macs.

Release Window May Stretch into Early 2027

Although the OLED MacBook Pro was initially rumored for late 2026, production schedules and chip development could shift the launch into early 2027. Apple is expected to retain the 14-inch and 16-inch size options, ensuring compatibility with existing accessories and workflows.

Market analysts believe the combination of OLED, a thinner chassis, and M6 performance could spark a major upgrade wave, especially as the MacBook Pro approaches its 20th anniversary. For professionals and enthusiasts, the wait could lead to one of the most advanced laptops Apple has ever produced.
