Samsung: Samsung’s new ISOCELL HP5 is a 200MP camera sensor with the world’s tiniest 0.5µm pixels, bringing brighter low-light photos, stunning 6× zoom, and ultra-fast 8K shooting to future smartphones.

Samsung has officially launched the ISOCELL HP5, a new 200MP camera sensor with the world’s first 0.5µm pixels. Despite the tiny pixel size, it promises brighter, sharper, and more detailed photos even in low light. The compact 1/1.56-inch sensor fits perfectly in slim phones and telephoto cameras, giving manufacturers more design freedom for future devices.

Next-generation pixel technology

Samsung has used its most advanced imaging technologies to make the HP5 possible. The sensor integrates Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) and Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG), which together allow each tiny pixel to collect more light and preserve detail in bright or low-light conditions. It also features an enhanced DTI Center Cut (DCC) structure that boosts light capture while minimizing image noise. Samsung claims this setup improves conversion gain by 150% and reduces random noise by up to 40%, depending on the shooting environment. These innovations help the HP5 overcome the usual limitations of small pixels, ensuring clearer and more vibrant results.

Smart zoom and powerful video

The ISOCELL HP5 is designed for flexibility. It supports 2× in-sensor zoom that looks and feels optical, meaning you can zoom in without sacrificing detail. When paired with a 3× telephoto lens, the sensor achieves up to 6× lossless zoom, delivering crisp and natural-looking close-ups. It also supports Smart ISO Pro and Staggered HDR, improving exposure balance and dynamic range for scenes with mixed lighting.

On the video front, the HP5 can record in 8K at 30fps, 4K at 120fps, and 1080p at 240fps, making it a strong option for mobile videographers. It supports 8-bit, 10-bit, 12-bit, and 14-bit RAW formats, giving photographers full creative control in editing.

Fast performance and lifelike color

High-resolution cameras often struggle with slow processing, but the HP5 changes that with End-to-End AI Remosaic technology, which processes full 200MP images in under two seconds. This means users can shoot at full resolution with minimal delay. The sensor also provides 13-bit color depth, capable of representing more than 550 billion color shades a big advantage for lifelike, accurate photos.

Technical specifications

The ISOCELL HP5 offers an effective resolution of 16,384 × 12,288 pixels (200MP) with a Tetra²pixel RGB Bayer pattern for improved light capture. It achieves 7.5 fps at full resolution, 30 fps at 50MP, and 90 fps at 12.5MP. The sensor uses an electronic rolling shutter and has 10-bit ADC accuracy. It supports both D-PHY (4 lanes at 4.5 Gbps per lane) and C-PHY (3 trios at 4 Gsps per trio) interfaces for fast data transfer.

For focusing, it uses Super QPD phase detection autofocus (PDAF), and for HDR, it includes Smart ISO Pro (iDCG) and Staggered HDR. The sensor also supports analog gain up to 16× at full resolution and 256× at 12.5MP. Power levels are kept efficient with 2.2V for analog, 1.8V for I/O, and 1.0V for the digital core, and it operates between −20°C to +85°C, ensuring stability in various conditions.

Ready for the next wave of smartphones

Samsung confirms that the ISOCELL HP5 is already in mass production and will debut soon in upcoming smartphones, including the vivo Y500 Pro. With its advanced light-capturing technologies, impressive zoom performance, and ultra-fast processing, the HP5 sets a new standard for what smartphone cameras can achieve.
